Happiness is Fluffy Jingle Shaped…

Or that’s what my parents always said. You see, my big sister Louise was gifted a ‘fluffy jingle shape’ toy when born, and she loved it to bits. Literally. Happiness really was fluffy jingle shaped for her when it was lying next to her in the cot. With the birth of my first baby approaching I’ve been thinking about the significance of these early toys, how precious they are to us, even into adulthood.

I walked into the bathroom a couple of days ago to find my big butch hubby, sleeves rolled up, washing his old childhood toy ‘Pappy’ in the baby bath, getting it ready to meet the new addition to the family… It’s a very old, dog-eared, one-eyed, lump of stuffing in the shape of a leopard that to this day Greg still holds dear and looks on with real affection. I can’t mock, I also have my old ‘Hedgy’ the hedgehog tucked away in a box, and my other sister Anna  still has ‘Teddy’, held together now with sheer will power rather than stitching. I’m not sure what happened to Louise’s fluffy jingle shape but I’m sure it died content.  Pappy is now squeaky clean and less of a health hazard, but I think we’ll still be on the lookout for a brand new leopard friend for the new baby, so she can love it to bits from scratch…

Hilary Mackay - I knew that was Pappy even when I saw him on my tiny wee BB screen!! He was iseperable from him! I think Daniel once took a shine to Pappy and actually gave him a hug (he was only 2 yrs old) I'll never forget the look of fear on Gregs face!! HaHa

Ariana

With the birth of my first baby looming large on the horizon, and my bump getting bigger, it was time to stop shooting and start my maternity leave. It’s been very strange the past few weeks not shooting but it was getting too tricky to heave my equipment around (although my bump made a good tripod to rest the camera on!)

However, with my friends Lisa and Richard celebrating the birth of baby Ariana, I just had to dust off the camera to take a few pictures for them! Ariana is such a sweet wee thing with a beautiful name to match. I’m very jealous, waiting for our own baby to arrive is starting to drag, we just can’t wait to meet her!

Mr & Mrs Patience….

Finally!  It’s time to post pictures from my very own wedding! I’d like to mutter an embarrassed apology in advance about the sheer number of pictures below – I just can’t help myself…

So, who shot my wedding?! Well, I was a lucky girl indeed – my photographer was the very talented Kate Chandler, (who also made my beautiful birdcage veil and fascinator!) a dear friend and fantastic snapper. Thank you Kate, not only did you do an amazing job under pressure (it’s very stressful shooting a photographer’s wedding!) but you made us feel so relaxed in front of the camera. Nobody else could have got such lovely shots of us… And I also had some wonderful shots done by photographer friends Jayne Wright and Cate Gillon. Thank you, I’m spoiled rotten by the pictures of our wonderful day…

Before we start with the pictures I have a few special mentions to make – firstly, the fantastic make-up artist Lucy Gourlay of LG Makeup- I have her to thank for the lack of airbrushing needed on my photos! And thanks go to the talented Gail Rankin of Bespoke Wedding Hair, who made my unruly mop into a fabulous updo! I also have to thank Planet Flowers for their amazing work – my bouquet was just so beautiful, I nearly cried with joy when it arrived -  all of the buttonholes were unique and the 60 vases of gorgeous flowers (all different) scattered around the church hall made the day very special. Also a big thank you to my new sister-in law Chloe of Bebaroque for embellishing my dress with sparkles a couple of nights before the wedding and to Angela of Jacques & Lawrence Catering for such gorgeous food!

Greg and I were married on March 17th after a four month engagement at the beautiful registry office in Edinburgh, with our reception at the fantastic St Columba’s by the Castle. I was six and a half months pregnant, but my bump stayed fairly hidden under my petticoats! It was a simple vintage-style day, many lovely guests, lots of laughter and a great deal of fun for us both. It’s a complete cliche but it really was the happiest day of my life, I married the man I love, and it will no doubt stay the happiest day until our baby daughter arrives on the scene in June!

The ceremony was wonderful – lots of love and laughter, beautiful readings,  In My Life by The Beatles sung very enthusiastically and very loud by the congregation, and walking back down the aisle to ‘I Feel Good’ by James Brown! We spilled out into Parliament Square and were greeted by a carnival atmosphere, provided by incredible samba drummers Commotion (thank you guys!) and were soon surrounded by guests and Japanese tourists alike!

Then off for some fun portraits with Kate before heading onto the reception…

St Columba’s by the Castle was a perfect venue for us – we decorated it with bunting, fresh flowers and fairy lights, and included a sweetie bar for guests to snack on. We made confetti cones from sheet music and our guests had a great time throwing it at us (including the cones!) when we arrived at the hall!

Our first dance was ‘For Once in my Life’ by Stevie Wonder, and then we boogied the night away to an ipod disco and fab live music performed by various family members. Thanks guys, the joint was jumpin’..

And finally here are some of the shots from our DIY photobooth – such great fun, Greg’s uncle Keith created the amazing props and they were used all night! I should probably explain that the guns and ‘bairn’ sign are because of my ‘delicate’ state, and it being a ‘shotgun wedding!’

Finally I’d like to be a sentimentalist and thank my husband, the gorgeous Mr Patience, for making me a very happy girl indeed…..xxx

Spring at Lauriston…

It was a beautiful spring day for a shoot and Lauriston Castle Gardens is just gorgeous at the moment!  I had been asked along to photograph Sophie, Patrick and Kate for a family shoot – great kids and we had a lot of fun moving around the gardens taking shots. I last photographed this wonderful family of cousins a few years ago, when Kate was just a baby, so it was lovely to see how they are all getting on! Thank you Julie and Wendy for a fantastic shoot…

Twice blessed…

Well, despite being officially on maternity leave now I’ve still got a few fun shoots to share with you from the last couple of weeks! Check out these beautiful twins – double the grins and just gorgeous. Robert and  Gemma were very sweet, inquisitive and cheeky and great fun to photograph. Thank you Sinead and Andrew for a fantastic shoot, the twins are beautiful…

Darcy and Alexander…

I love being invited back to photograph a family as they grow, and was delighted to be asked by Alicia and Nick to photograph their beautiful daughter Darcy. I photographed their son Alexander back in 2009 when he was the same age (click here to see his pictures!) so it was lovely to meet the newest arrival and see what a lovely wee lad Alexander has become! Darcy was a lot of fun, very sweet with lovely blue eyes – and the best dressed girl in town! Rockin’ the faux fur for the shoot!…

Wee fighter…

I was so excited to finally meet beautiful baby Annabelle for her newborn shoot, after she entered the world in rather dramatic fashion. She’s six weeks old now but still not due to be born for another couple of weeks, as she was born prematurely back in mid February! After a tough time in hospital she’s now doing great and weighs around 5.5lbs.  I was booked to do Kari-Ann’s maternity portraits on the week when she went into labour at  just over 7 months pregnant! It’s been a difficult time for Kari-Anna and Gary but they’ve got a gorgeous wee daughter – she’s such a lovely little character, bright as a button with a lovely mop of baby hair! Well done to you all – she’s an amazing wee dod and you must be very proud…

sandra - thank you for taking beautiful pictures of my first grand child, obviously i am biased but they are amazing, regard Sandra Grierson-Ritchie (Grand-Mum)

Sam - These photo's are amazing, what a gorgeous family. Sam x

Ol’ blue eyes…

What a perfect day, photographing a lovely wee boy called Thomas in the bluebells and spring sunshine! He was a happy chap, grinning away with the most piercing blue eyes, and made my job very easy for me. Thank you Gemma and Stewart for a fantastic shoot, I’ll look forward to showing you the rest of the pictures soon!

cristina - hermosooooo, I saw that baby I knew he has to be scottish!!! he is the cutes baby from your blog! <3

Green fingers…

I was commissioned by Amateur Gardening Magazine to photograph the lovely Jo Whittingham – she’s their new gardening columnist and so the magazine needed a good series of shots of Jo in her garden, with beautiful son Evan, to illustrate her column. I’ve been lucky enough to photograph Jo a good few times now for various magazines – she’s always great fun and I always enjoy our shoots together. I’ll be doing another couple of shoots with her in different seasons – roll on the late summer shoot!

Such a busy time!

I’m seriously behind with the blog, which is always a good indicator that I’ve been rushed off my feet! My apologies for the long gap since last updating it! It has been very hectic recently – not only have I been booked for lots of fantastic shoots, but I’ve also squeezed in moving house and getting married, and all whilst growing bigger through pregnancy! I’m now getting on for 7.5 months pregnant and it’s getting very difficult to fasten up my camera belt! Our wedding was fantastic, I’ll be posting pictures up in the next wee while, but before that I’d like to share with you some of the great shoots I’ve had the pleasure of doing in the last wee while…

To start with, I’ll share some pictures from the double engagement shoot done with the fab photographer Cate Gillon. Cate got married a few weeks before I did, and as we were both more used to being behind the camera than in front of it, we swapped engagement shoots with each other as gifts for the wedding! Great fun and it was really good to practice being photographed, she’s a fantastic photographer and put us both at ease. Cate and Marc seemed to enjoy themselves in front of the camera too! Here are a few of my favourites of them…

And here are a few of Cate’s showing Greg, myself and baby to be… Love them, thanks Cate… x

Tina and Ian…

I felt very privileged to be a part of Tina and Ian’s very special and intimate ceremony held at Dalhousie Castle on their 25th wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day. It was a beautiful day, Tina looked stunning in her red dress and the sun shone down as they renewed their vows to each other in the castle. It was wonderful to be involved in their day, shared with just a few close family members  – especially with my own nuptials just around the corner. They spoke with great sincerity during the ceremony and are still very much in love to each other – Ian did make me shed a tear behind the camera with his emotive words! Thank you Ian and Tina, it was a fantastic experience and a pleasure to meet you both…

Ian & Tina Lindon - Helen, simply wow, just wow. What a photgrapher. The day was great and you made the picture taking just so easy and relaxed for us. so again many many thanks.

Archie…

This was the third portrait shoot with this energetic wee lad that I’d had the pleasure of doing! I’d previously photographed Archie with his beautiful sisters Emily and Honour a few years ago at the beach near Elie and then at the farm in the Scottish Borders. It was time to capture some gorgeous shots of Archie on his own, and it was great to see how he’s grown up in the last three years! Thanks Archie for a really fun shoot – you made hanging upside-down from trees look really easy!

Summer comes early to Scotland…

I couldn’t believe our luck with the weather when I met this lovely family for a shoot at the beach in Earlsferry, Fife. Amazingly warm for February, gorgeous sunshine and a great portrait shoot with three lovely children, Rosaleen, Patrick and Sarah. We ran amok on the beach and also took some shots at their beautifully converted cottage. Their two wee cousins also made an appearance in some rather amusing shots! Thanks guys for a great shoot, I’ll look forward to sharing the rest with you soon…

Jo and Dave rock Glasgow…

I was through in sunny Glasgow recently to photograph the lovely Jo and Dave as they tied the knot together in gorgeous style! They were married at St Gregory’s Church in Glasgow, and held their reception at the very stylish Hotel Du Vin, One Devonshire Gardens. Such a beautiful wedding, so many lovely little details, including a VW Campervan as their wedding car – they’re a really fab couple! It was a real pleasure for myself and second shooter Kate to be involved in such a warm and loving day. I photographed them with their stunning little boy Harris a few months ago, so it was lovely to see them celebrate their love for each other with their friends and family.

Thank you Jo and Dave – it was lovely to be a part of such a gorgeous day, especially with my own nuptials approaching fast! Very inspiring…

That’s Entertainment…

I had such fun photographing these two gorgeous wee things – the wonderfully cheeky Sebastian and Chloe at their home in Edinburgh. They kept me entertained from the start – we had singing, dancing, jumping on beds (and that was just me!) and they generally had me in fits of giggles. Thank you all for a fabulous shoot, your children are beautiful and made my day…

Jackie Rankine - These are gorgeous Helen. You've captured Chloe and Sebastian beautifully.

Oh my…..

Gosh, sometimes my job is soooo hard. Try photographing these delicious cakes for example, whilst not accidently drooling on them. I’m not kidding, my mouth was watering for the whole shoot! I was in gorgeous cafe Mimi’s Bakehouse at The Shore in Leith, to photograph their beautiful scrumptious cakes and take some interior shots for The Independent newspaper. The girls were a lot of fun to photograph -  a huge thanks to all the friendly staff for their help, and in particular for giving me a wee goodie bag of cakes to take away…..yum…..

ETAG conference 2012

I had a lively and slightly surreal start to the day photographing a whole host of colourful characters alongside ETAG chair Robin Worsnop to promote the Edinburgh Tourism Action Group 2012 conference! The event brought together many Edinburgh businesses  from different sectors with the aim of working together to improve tourism in Edinburgh. The day was a huge success and involved many interesting speakers, including MSP Fergus Ewing and the enigmatic businessman Hamish Taylor, who gave an energetic masterclass in improving business. It was a real eye opener hearing him speak, and it made me rethink the way that I run my business. It was an inspiring day all round…

New little one…

Nearly two years ago I had the pleasure of photographing Calum, a gorgeous wee man who was full of smiles for the camera. Here’s one of the pictures from back then…

Now, in 2012, it was time to meet his new little sister, the beautiful Emma and capture images of her at the same stage. They look so similar, the same smiley eyes and big grin. And lovely to see how Calum is turning into a fantastic wee boy! Thanks guys for inviting me back, it was wonderful to meet the new addition!

Three little girls…

I had the pleasure this morning of photographing three gorgeous little girls, all with beautiful names! Ava (age 4) Lily (age 2) and Rosa (aged just 10 months) were fantastic fun to photograph. The family live in the heart of stunning East Lothian countryside so doing some shots outdoors was a must. However, it was so chilly (brrr!) that we did the majority of the shots indoors in the warm and ventured out near the end for some fun shots of the girls together. Such sweet girls, they made me laugh a great deal! Thanks Nic and Martha, you have a truly lovely family…

An exciting year ahead…

A belated Happy New Year to you all! The best thing about new year is how fresh it feels, anything could happen in the next twelve months and it all lies ahead of us. For me, this new year brings lots of exciting prospects, starting with this wee one here….

Yes, it’s official, I’m due to have my first baby in the summer and I can’t wait until this wee one makes it into the world. Very exciting… My gorgeous man, Greg and I have had a very eventful year together – we’ve had some tough times over the last year, but what we’ve gone through has just made us stronger as a couple. Love him to bits, we have such a brilliant relationship, and this baby will be very loved.

And then things got better again… In December, on a weekend trip to Paris, Greg proposed with his great-grandmothers engagement ring at the beautiful Sacre Coeur, and I accepted! We’re getting married in March, when I’ll possibly be the size of a small planet but very happy. I’m thinking of hiring a small white marquee as a dress. The wedding will be a simple but stylish affair, and I can’t wait. After five years photographing other people’s beautiful weddings and tiny newborns, it’s now my time to experience first hand what life has to offer….

Sheila Sim - Congratulations Helen! What lovely news. And it's great to hear a bit more about the woman behind the camera ;-)

Denise McDonald - Oh Helen - Wonderful news on both accounts....Dx

Claire - Very exciting news Helen, congratulations to you both!!

Jo McCallum (Hughes) - Just saw this! Gorgeous pictures and what a ring! Roll on March! X
